Interesting facts about Aronia…

The Aronia shrub, native in North America and East of Canada, made its way to Europe in the 18th century, being cultivated especially in Russia and The Scandinavian countries. In the recent years, it became more popular among the farmers in Germany and East European countries. Out of the three species of aronia: red – with a subtle sweet tase, black – more sour and astringent taste and purple- a combination of the previous too, the mostly spread and also the richest in nutrients is the Black Chokeberry (Aronia Melanocarpa).

In our plantation, 2 subspecies of Aronia Melanocarpa – Nero and Melrom can be found. (Melrom is a superior variety developed by the Tree Research and Development Institute of Maracineni)

The Aronia shrub is pest and extreme temperatures resistant. It loves humidity and sunny surfaces, as well as medium and easy soils with a neutral pH.

The Aronia fruits grow in small bouquets and the best time to harvest them is the end of August – beginning of September.

The high level of antioxidants (more than in any other berries), low sugar content and nutritive substances are the main reasons for Aronia to be considered a super aliment.

Ways to consume Aronia

  • Fresh fruits

The astringent, slightly sour taste of the fresh aronia fruits may determine a reticence of some people in consuming them raw. But there are alternatives, such as combining them with sweeter fruits, honey or maple syrup, adding them to yogurts, porridge, puddings or granola bars.

The Aronia berries maintain their properties for a few weeks if refrigerated and for up to 8 months if frozen.

  • Pressed Juice, no sugars added

We recommend daily intakes of maximum 100 ml/day, simple or diluted with water, after breakfast or lunch, in 3 up to 6 months cures.

  • Jam

A delicious Aronia jam can be prepared using regular sugar, various sweeteners or apple juice. Studies have shown that this kind of processing doesn’t significantly reduce the quantity of antioxidants and polyphenols contained in the fruits.

  • Alchoolic Beverages

One can enjoy Aronia wine or schnaps.

  • Dried fruits

The dried Aronia fruits can be consumed raw, in combination with different nuts or other dried fruits or they can be brewed as a tea.
